But had couple of questions to those who do have one. First, how/where do you charge your moped? Can you take the battery out, charge the battery and put it back in? Or do you need a space like a garage in order to charge the scooter?" Question posted courtesy of: X-treme Gas Scooters A1: MYSTRO replied: "get a transformer for it" A2: Blue replied: "My moped has to be plugged into the wall, unfortunantly it plugs into the moped, not the battery, but fortunantly the battery doesn't die often." A3: male_62_michigan replied: "I believe most electric scooters have an onboard charger, so you 'plug in the scooter'. You really wouldn't need a garage, but you do need a power outlet with an extension cord. I suppose if it were more convenient to you, you could buy a battery charger and just take the battery and charger into the house for the night to charge it." A4: NinjaRacer replied: "You will require an outlet to plug the entire scooter into, and a transformer to charge it. You can make a quick disconnect if you must bring the battery inside, but it could be dangerous if you are not skilled at such things." summerlove_14 asked: "Ok I'm 5 feet, 15, and 78 pounds. I want a cute, girly, electric scooter to ride around my neighborhood. I would like a scooter that i wouldn't grow out of and that is kinda cheap since i'll be paying for it myself. I just can't find any electric scooters that are girly or in girly colors. Thanks!" Question posted courtesy of: X-treme Gas Scooters A1: Joe B replied: "NOA! Also Kymco makes a agility 50 that gets over 100 mpg. it is quality made." A3: billcarr replied: "Cute girly girls don't belong on electric scooters. They belong on 125 cc rompin' stompin' scooters, such as a Vespa or any of the 4 main Japanese brands. A couple years old is ok and a money saver. NO electric,no 49cc, period. To save money buy a bicycle, not an electric. Good luck." Question posted courtesy of: WholesaleScooterList.com-Gas Scooter A1: dana1981 replied: "That depends what kind of electric scooter. As long as you're just talking about those little ones that you stand up on and only go 13 mph, there aren't any laws. If you're talking about something more like a moped that goes over 20 mph, you need to have a driver's license." A2: Alisa replied: "The law is you MUST have a helmet on, and you may not ride with traffic, meaning you can't ride on the streets with cars, and I can't remember the age limit is, but call garden grove police department and ask, they will tell you, and don't worry you won't get in trouble." A3: Dana1981, Master of Science replied: "Wow 40 miles is a tall order. My moped (R Martin EVD) has about a 30 mile range - I can get it higher if I go slower, but to travel 40 miles I'd have to keep the speed below 40 mph and it would take well over an hour and a half. You'd even have to go easy on the Vectrix to get the range to 40 miles, but you could probably make the trip in 1 to 1.5 hours. See the link below for a summary of electric vehicles (including mopeds and motorcycles)." Climbing limit eg: 15 to 20 deg hill rise. Load limit, type of tires brakes. Warranty and service. The max speed limit is fixed, ie: 32kph in Canada, Max motor size is 500watts in Canada and 750watts in US." soccerxxkid asked: "I need an easy way to get to school but I am only 14. How fast is fairly fast? Whatever you do, avoid the X-Treme scooters. They're very cheap, but for a reason. They break down frequently, have a terrible warranty, and are very hard to get repaired. I've seen countless complaints from people about these scooters. Personally I recently bought an iMoto2 Verde scooter for $1200. It goes up to 25 mph and around 40 miles per charge, which is very good for that price. The scooters are hard to find because the company is new. Their website - - is still under construction. A local electric car store in my area just happened to be selling them. Most electric mopeds cost around $2500 and have a top speed around 30 mph with a range of around 30 miles. Mine only has an 800W motor (that's why it's so much cheaper) so it doesn't accelerate as well or go very fast up hills. Most electric mopeds have 1500-3000W motors. A good place to find stores that sell electric mopeds is EV Finder. If you're just looking for one of the little electric scooters that you stand up on, Schwinn makes some good ones, and so does Razor. I want to take it places like to the store, movie theaters around town etc. I'm close enough to all these places but too far to walk. I want to use my scooter to get there but am afraid that someone just might pick it up and walk away with it. It's 70 pounds, which wouldn't be too hard to pick up and go, but definitely inconvenient to just pick up myself and walk around with it. How do I secure it? Is there anything in the scooter world that addresses this problem?" Question posted courtesy of: WholesaleScooterList.com-Gas Scooter A1: 707 replied: "Get a heavy duty chain or cable type lock at a bicycle store." A2: rockbase replied: "you have to cable lock it to a poll or street sign, or buy a alarm for it, but that will only tell you its being stolen." A3: billcarr replied: "Treat it like a bicycle and chain it to a fixed object. Strong chain - big lock." A4: tomd1980 replied: "The answer is simple. Get a big chain and a big padlock and when you park it anywhere, chain it up, even if it is only for a few minutes. Ideally, the chain should go round the front fork, through the front whell and around a heavy immovable object. Do not simply wrap the chain through the wheel and the fork as a favourite trick of motorbike thieves is to stick a metal bar through each wheel and carry the bike off into a waiting van. Also, do not allow the padlock to lie of the ground as it is much more vulnerable to being hit by a hammer (if it is off the ground all the thief can do is give it a glancing blow). I would also advise parking it somewhere where people walk past as a thief will never want to work with an audience. If you make it hard for a thief, they will move on and look for easier pickings. If there is a big chain and padlock, they will not risk it. Every second they spend either trying to pick or break the lock or cut the chain will dramatically raise their chances of getting caught so if you have visible protection in a public place they will move on. I was reading a motorbike magazine recently and they found the state of most motorcycle locks and chains to be very unsatisfactory. despite this I would still advise one as normal bike locks are even flimsier." My son just got a new electric scooter and I was wondering if I could ride that and be safe? I have a feeling the answer is no. P.S. Scooters are cool. About the public intoxication. What if I wasn't drunk but just had a couple of beers. I have a drivers license and 2 cars but I would ride the scooter if I was over the limit. Jake your calling me a girl? You may see my scooter parked outside your mom's house tomorrow night. Don't worry ill take good care of her. Grumpy old man you say you WALK a 6 minute mile???? Have you ever seen the Comcast commercial when the put the high speed on the speed walker with the treadmill? That must be you. Do you people not understand my question. I have a couple of beers at my cousin's house and would rather not drive home. Would it be LEGAL to ride the scooter. I am not talking about being wasted but just one beer over the limit and playing it safe. A 6 minute mile is 10 miles per hour. That is a damn good pace for an old man, especially walking." Question posted courtesy of: X-treme Gas Scooters A1: Koosher replied: "Yes you can get a DUI for that." A2: stephen p replied: "You would not get a DUI, but you would get a Public Intoxication charge. DUI pertains to motor vehicles on the roadway." A3: smerc72 replied: "i dont believe that they would give you a dui but they would give you a public intoxication charge" A4: bush-deathgrip replied: "motorized vehicles are intended for the streets, not sidewalks....unless you are so drunk you cannot tell the difference ps scooters are for girls" A5: toneykuhnz replied: "Yup, you can get a DUI, even though you're on the sidewalk and your driving a dinky scooter. Heck, you can get a OWI riding a bike cranked up. You arent really a threat to yourself, you're a threat to others." A6: bolillo_loco replied: "The laws state “vehicle.†This is all-inclusive! Skateboards, scooters, bicycles, boats, horses, goats, riding mowers, in short anything that will transport you. I’m surprised that they haven’t arrested people for going on an elevator or escalator. Short of walking/running, about the only mode of transportation that I’m aware of that isn’t considered a DUI are roller skates and or roller blades." A7: ∴ℑak∉∴ replied: "LoL electric scooter are for girls .....true....true...." A8: gramma_arlene replied: "I think your son should have a talk with you about being intoxicated in public and for using his scooter while under the influence. He shouldn't put it off until you grow up because it could then be too late." A9: grumpyoldman replied: "I am old and I walk 6 minute miles. You should try it." A10: silverlock1974 replied: "Despite what the retired officer said, I had a cousin who got a DUI in California for driving home drunk from a bar in his wheelchair. He was so drunk he drove off the sidewalk and fell into the street. DUI. I suggest you consider a taxi as part of your going out expenses. You probably spend at least that much in beer/shots. Maybe even that much on tips. You would definitely spend that much on a DUI. Plus, you would get to know one taxi driver and they would probably end up knowing you and sometimes giving you deals and whatnot. Because you being responsible would be helping them make a living. Everyone wins." A11: Debbi replied: "Yes" A12: bill replied: "why would you be riding your sons scooter and worse yet why would you be drunk if your son needs a scooter?" Question posted courtesy of: WholesaleScooterList.com-Gas Scooter A1: watty_ofthe_wattykins replied: "Decrease weight Get a bigger motor Yeah, you can get a bigger motor, you may have to make some modifications to the chassis but once you do that then change the voltage output and you've got more horsepower." A2: mopacfan replied: "Decrease the weight, yes. Bigger motor, probably not. Increase the voltage, check. However, doing so may void your warranty and/or burn up the motor." A3: ben s replied: "i would buy a newer one, or even gas powered. gas powered scooter are easy to beef up but electrics are harder" A4: Scott H replied: "Tie it to the back of a car. Anybody who would ride an electric scooter probably shouldn't go any faster than 17mph." Reality Check asked: "I bought an electric scooter from Craigslist for $25 but it has no key. Is it possible to how wire this and please give details on how. Thanks" Question posted courtesy of: Unusual Scooters Hard to find A1: oklatom replied: "You don't. You look at the make and model, and contact the manufacturer to see about getting a key, or a new ignition with a key. Usually a vehicle without a key is a pretty good indication you have purchased stolen goods." A2: Hi! replied: "try looking in the back of the ignition. if theres is only 2 wires try splice em then connect em." A3: rockbase replied: "you can connect wires behind switch but then anyonecan steal it. get a locksmith to make you a key." cjb0029 asked: "I need a good cheap electric engine... any suggestions? I want to build an electric scooter, not like the stand up ones, but like the sit-down vespas. I need a good motorc, maybe 10hp, and for as cheap as possible and that goes maybe 30 or 40 mph. Anyone know of a good one, or a good lawnmower to pull one out of, etc? thanks" Question posted courtesy of: Unusual Scooters Hard to find A1: duh replied: "Firstly, you don't need 10 hp to go 35mph. here is a good power calculator site: Try a crystalyte 500 series brushless at 72 volts. You will of course need the controller and batteries too." A2: keyway51 replied: "you could probably use a E-tek motor. Thunderstruck Motors can help" A3: John W replied: "Keep in mind that generators are also DC motors and alternators are also AC motors. The Urba-Electric car from the mid 70's used a 10 HP generator from an aircraft. You should be able to find something suitable at an electronics surplus store. An electric lawnmower will be limited by the current available from a standard wall outlet ie.: 120V * 15A / 750W/HP or 2.4 HP. Chances are an electric lawnmower will be about 1.5 to 2 HP. An alternator from a passenger car will be about 1 HP but there are souped up alternators available after market and there's always larger vehicles like trucks, buses, boats and planes that may have larger alternators or generators (planes tend to have generators as they are usually operated at 75% throttle)."
